Stephen Arnold and his family lost all their land in Rhode Island and went by horseback to Vermont. Stephen Arnold and his brother-in-law, Randall Rice went first to find land. They settled what is now Clarendon, Vermont. Stephen Arnold had been a ship captain before their fleet was sunk by the British. Stephen Arnold was made the first town clerk of Clarendon, Vermont and held the office for 20 years. He served a short time in the revolutionary war. His name is on the DAR index.
